Social Networking

What are some ways (corporate and otherwise) that these technologies can be used? What are the benefits of these technologies to society? Be specific. Is there a "dark side"? Make sure to include your opinion of the way these technologies might evolve in the future.

Technologies are the most important part of growing companies these days, especially during the current circumstances that we are living under, where most of the people are attending colleges virtually or working remotely from home and that has all been possible because of the technology that we have today. A great example would be how Facebook's video calling could be used for staff meetings and the list could go on forever. Another great example of the benefits that we get from these technologies/social media sites is that these can be used as a free tool for marketing by many small businesses, where they can just take a picture of the product, post it on social media, and link their website for people to buy. This a great way for small businesses to save money and benefit from many advantages that these great technologies provide.

In my opinion, everything that has a benefit also has a disadvantage "dark side". Everything that we do on the internet is somehow tracked by tracker's and other marketing companies, this is the main reason why when we search for something on google, we later start seeing advertisements of the same exact thing in our email's, social media's, etc. A great example is a tweet from Randi Zuckerberg, sister of Mark Zuckerberg, where she tweeted saying  "@cschweitz not sure where you got this photo. I posted it to friends only on FB. You reposting it to Twitter is way uncool." This is a great example that we should look at, that if Mark Zuckerburg's, sister's,  private information is not safe on Facebook, what makes us so sure that our information will be protected?

The way that these technologies can evolve in the future is by adding more privacy features, where it would make it extremely hard for hackers and bots to track us.

Blog V Wiki

Compare and contrast blogs and wikis. Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world. How can blogs be used for collaboration? Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?

Blogs and Wikis are two very interesting and important tools of communication. Both of these important tools are used to share information with the public. Blogs are controlled by the main blogger and Wikis, on the other hand, can be controlled by anyone. Blogs and Wikis are both available to anyone in the world. Wiki is defined as "The simplest online database that could possibly work." Wiki, the Hawaiian word for quick, wikis are essentially web pages that anyone- or at least anyone with permission- can create or edit. Blogs are Wikis that are both free to use and cut the cost of publishing and sharing information.

In today's time when everyone is very active on social media websites and news spreads very fast because of the all mass media technologies that we have today. A great example is "Yahoo acquires Tumblr, Promises 'Not to Screw it up" which was shared by about 4.6 people on Facebook. This article shows how important Yahoo thinks a popular microblogging service is that it paid $1.1 Billion dollars for it.

Wiki can be used by businesses to connect with there customers, where customers can rate the business on how they are performing, things that can be changed to make that specific business better.

Research on Youtube

I chose to do my term paper as a research paper on youtube. In my opinion, youtube plays a very big role in the life of today's generation. Another thing that fascinates me about youtube is, how some people have turned youtube into a full-time business. In my term paper, I intend to cover topics like - How people make a living from youtube, How youtube works (the algorithm behind the whole thing), why likes and subscribers are so important and why are ad's so important, what you can and cannot post on youtube, Etc.   People believe that youtube is all about music and I would like to change that perspective by showing people what youtube is all about. I plan on touching all these topics with full details in my research paper.
